Consular Services
The Consulate General safeguards the interest and safety of Icelandic citizens abroad. In case of emergency outside office hours, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs can be contacted 24/7 at +354 545 9900. Examples of consular assistance:
- Advice and information
- Issuing of emergency passports
- Measures in connection with serious illness or death of an Icelandic citizen abroad
- Measures in connection with major accidents and disasters involving Icelandic citizens abroad.
People intending to travel to Iceland should check what kind of travel documents they need and whether they need to obtain a Schengen visa prior to arrival. In principle, a valid passport is required, but certain identity cards are accepted. Even when there are no border controls within the Schengen area, the airlines will require some form of identification.
