HRC61 - NB8 Statement - EID on oral update of FFM for the Sudan
Human Rights Council – 62nd Session
Item 2: Enhanced ID on oral update of FFM for the Sudan
Statement delivered by Iceland on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States
15 June 2026
President,
The Nordic-Baltic countries thank the Fact-Finding Mission for its important update and commend its continued efforts under extremely challenging circumstances.
The situation in Sudan remains catastrophic. The ongoing conflict has triggered widespread civilian suffering, economic collapse and mass displacement.
Credible reports show that both SAF and RSF have committed war crimes, and in February the FFM concluded that the RSF has been responsible for acts that may amount to crimes against humanity.
The Mission’s findings continue to point to large-scale atrocities. We are particularly troubled by reports of conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence, ethnic targeting, and starvation as a method of warfare. These demonstrate a systematic pattern of abuse that must end immediately.
Recent drone attacks and attacks against civilian infrastructure have further escalated the situation for civilians. The risk of further mass atrocities remains high.
We call on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, protect civilians, and ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.
Accountability is essential. Those responsible for violations must be held to account. The Nordic-Baltic countries will continue to support the FFM and broader efforts to ensure justice for victims and survivors.
Finally, we noted with interest your recent joint declaration with the AU FFM on the situation in Sudan. Can you tell us more about this cooperation and what prospects you see going forward?
Thank you.
